This Web Site is dedicated to my GIS-1 Final Project, titled U.S. Major International Airports. It is dedicated too, to all regular people (including myself) who do not have access to this kind of projects from within GIS ArcView, because it is a quite expensive software package to be bought individually. Also, this is a great opportunity to show to the entire internet community the virtues of GIS technology. Therefore, I have two good reasons to publish my project on the Internet.

As you will notice, this is not a large site, it only contains a few pages that will reveal to you what it took me to finish it. Since I started, it was not easy to find sources of information. I had to dig for days on web sites, magazines, and books. Also, I had to contact an Trans World Airlines pilot who gave me  good advice on how to find some crucial data for my project. From the beginning, I wanted to include airplane routes, shuttle companies serving the airports, rental car services, and so on. It took me only a few days to realize that I was embarking myself into a large project, so I decided to narrow in on what the teacher expects from this project. Five themes with its tables, attributes, charts, and layout.

The purpose of this project is to let people know basic geographic information about major international airports in the United States. This project includes several themes such as U.S. map, airport geographic location, passenger volume, airport diagrams, airport pictures, rivers, lakes, main highways, and roads within California and Hawaii. The themes have been chosen carefully, so they relate each other. The U.S. map theme is the base for this project, it is where all points of location and all the themes will be displayed. The airport location theme shows the exact geographical position of each airport. I used decimal degrees to accomplish this task. The passenger volume theme displays the amount of passengers that each airport handles each year. I divided them in ranges that fluctuate between 0 and 90,000,000. The airport diagrams theme shows the diagram of each airport, pilots can use this diagram information. The photo theme is to show the picture of each airport, some of them are good, some are really bad. I got them from the website of each airport. Rivers and lakes show the main source of water in the U.S.A. I'm using the rivers and lakes theme because they are  useful as a navigation reference-point in some cases of flight emergencies. Main highways and roads themes show Interstates Highways, main roads, secondary roads, and streets. These features it will help to find the best way to access  to the airports within the country, state or city. Also, I have labeled streets and airports to make the task of locating an airport more easy.

Finally, I want to thank to my GIS-1 instructor Ron McPherson and all the people who helped  me in bringing this project to light. I have to say that to accomplish this project I have spent weeks, days, and hours that have been very valuable to me. I have learned quite a deal of GIS-1 and GIS ArcView software going throughout this final project.
